They might not have two years of fashion school under their belts, but their legions of fans represent sizable buying power, so it’s inevitable that these celebrities would lend their names to a label. However, even the most popular teen idols don’t necessarily find success with their namesake brands. As with any fashion line, it takes a well-designed, marketable product to be a success. Let’s take a look at ten of the most notable celebrity fashion lines by teen idols, some that have become wildly successful, and some that have fizzled.

Avril Lavigne. Lavigne’s “Abbey Dawn” clothing line for Kohl’s is one of the retailer’s best-selling brands. Her signature pieces include skinny jeans, hoodies, and graphic tees. She even collaborated with Disney for an “Alice in Wonderland” inspired collection, demonstrating the strength of the Abbey Dawn line. It is now a high-end lifestyle brand encompassing leather jackets, outerwear, and tops for both men and women. The brand has become so successful, William Rast flagship stores have opened in Los Angeles and Santa Clara, California. Perhaps one reason William Rast has succeeded is that Timberlake hired actual fashion designers to develop the collection.

Lindsay Lohan. A stint as Artistic Advisor for Emanuel Ungaro resulted in a critically panned collection. Although she has parted ways with Ungaro, she continues with her own “6126” line. Originally just a line of leggings, 6126 now features dresses and bodysuits inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

Taylor Swift. The multi Grammy-winning teen queen partnered with clothing label LEI to create a line of $14 sundresses that were sold exclusively at Walmart. After one season, the line was no longer available at the store.

Mandy Moore. The once tween pop star and actress branched into fashion with her line “Mblem,” a brand of contemporary knitwear and cashmere that sold in high-end boutiques and department stores. After three years, she pulled the plug on the line, saying she would get back into fashion when she found a partnership that reflected her ideas, which was not happening with Mblem.

Hilary Duff. The “Lizzy McGuire” star’s first foray into fashion was her clothing line “Stuff by Hilary Duff,” which was sold through Target. The company soon expanded its business to include furniture, fragrance and jewelry, but Duff eventually discontinued the line when she felt she did not have full creative control anymore. She then launched “Femme for DKNY” in a partnership with Donna Karan, which sold very well.

Lauren Conrad. After attending fashion college at FIDM and interning at Teen Vogue. the reality TV star developed “The Lauren Conrad Collection,” which was carried at trendy boutiques like Kitson. Because of lackluster sales, however, the line was discontinued. Undaunted, she is now in Kohl’s stores with the affordably priced “LC Lauren Conrad” line.

Probably the first personality who changed the face of clothing and tried to impose new tendencies was Charles Frederick Worth, an Englishman who opened the first fashion house in Paris. Instead of leaving anonymous seamstresses design and create clothes after the style worn in court, he started to dictate his clients what they should wear and thus became the first fashion designer who was not just a dressmaker. Following his revolution, fashion houses began to hire artists in order to draw and sketch the designs for the garments, which made the process cheaper. This was at the end of the 19th century.

The next revolution took place in the 1920s, when fashion simplified. Fashion evolved until the 1960s, when another major change took place, but during this period tendencies were quite predictable. However, what shook-up fashion during this period was the fact that more than one prevailing trend was accepted, more precisely a plethora of possibilities. This was the beginning of the Hippie era, the heyday of Teddy boys, the apparition of the mini-skirt, but also the right period for the haute-couture flamboyant designs of well-established designers. Paris was still the capital of fashion, but America was slowly winning ground, especially for the fashion of different subcultures.

The 1980s marked the end of the Hippie era in fashion, and designers focused on the seductive side of women, using new materials and cuts, which could put it in value. The 1990s are famous for the emergence of minimalism in fashion, and the 2000s are thought to be the bleakest years in fashion. No revolution seems to be possible anymore, in this era of all these possibilities. However, great designers still impose trends, bearing influences from the past and from different cultures, trends that many people try to follow.

2012 Fashion Exhibitions in Museums Around the World

With the recent success of McQueen’s fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, must-see 2012 fashion exhibitions are on the rise with some of the most notable fashion designers out there. Harold Koda, curator in charge of the Custom Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, told the trade, “Clearly the critical as well as popular success of the McQueen show suggests that fashion design has a more secure place in the precincts of an art museum.” If fashion is no longer just for those interested in following trends, but rather for all who are interested in art, then fashion museum exhibitions are here to stay. Here is a list of the top three fashion displays that can be found at your local museum this year.

Fashion Exhibit 1: “IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA”

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is an organization that supports industry initiatives, rising talent and has some of the country’s most important designers as members. CFDA is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a show of over a hundred pieces of clothing and accessories, along with images and acknowledgements of the nearly six hundred designers who have been CFDA members over the years. This 2012 exhibition will be at The Museum at FIT in New York from February 10 to April 27.

Fashion Exhibit 2: “Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs”

This Paris show will convene Louis Vuitton’s past and present. See how Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs cultivated the label, from its conception and look when Vuitton was at the helm during the 19th century, to the contemporary ready-to-wear collections created during Jacobs’s 13 years as creative director. This show will be featured at the Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris from March 9 to September 16.

Fashion Exhibit 3: “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk”

The couture, cone bras, striped sailor shirts and costumes worn by celebrities like Madonna and Kylie Minogue make their way to San Francisco. The third stop on this touring exhibition will give Californians a reason to applaud fashion’s enfant terrible. This exciting exhibit will be at the De Young Museum in San Francisco starting on March 24 continuing until August 19.

Do You Want to Become a Fashion Photographer?

You see them everywhere, in magazines, on the runway during “Fashion Week” around the world and in television commercials. They are the super slim women strutting their stuff or the extraordinary beauties with their amazing good looks wearing the latest styles from the top designers. Yes, we are talking about the top fashion models of today and tomorrow. They seem to be everywhere you look, but who brings these beauties to us? Their images are photographed with extreme care, patience and that special look for style, composition and lighting composition. I am talking about today’s fashion photographers.

In the realm of fashion photographers today, my favorites are Annie Leibovitz and Melissa Rodwell and two very talented upcoming stars, Lindsay Adler and Lara Jade

With dreams of big paychecks and the glamorous lifestyle of rubbing shoulders with today’s rich and famous may be the dream of many a young aspiring photographer. This, however is not as easy to reach as you may think. The red carpet to the well-known fashion houses and magazines is not an easy road to take.

Here are some of my personal fashion photography tips:

Be prepared and have a clear idea of what you want to achieve from the shoot. From looking through the fashion magazines piled up in my office to tear sheets of makeup and hair styling ideas. Surround yourself with inspiring images to help you create the story or concept in your mind.

When photographing a fashion story or concept, I always put together a team of other professionals. These include hair stylists, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists. The team is there to help me achieve the images I have in mind and offering suggestions and input towards the photoshoot always brings the creative out in everyone. I never let anyone take over the final vision of the shoot, but the suggestions help tweak it to my final creation.

Fashion photography is about, you guessed it. Fashion. It can be the trends of today in clothing, but don’t forget it could be jewelry and accessories as well. make sure the images are going to show the “fashion” in its best light. I call this the “hero” of the image. Use lighting techniques to show the material at its best. If you are photographing jewelry, then the glitter and shine of the stones would become the “hero”.

These few personal tips help keep my eye on the goal of creating images worthy of becoming editorial spreads in the top fashion magazines.

Submitting to a magazine is only the first step onto that red carpet of the fashion houses and top magazines. Start with online magazines, they have strict rules for submissions but will help you to learn skills that will eventually lead to greater rewards. Also your name as a photographer will gain traction in the world of fashion. Your work just may be seen by the right person at the right time.

Keep your work fresh and current, fashion changes very quickly and you need to stay informed on every seasons changes.

I hope this may help a few readers get excited about the world of fashion photography, it is a great way to pursue your creative side and be artistic at the same time. It may not be an easy road to glamour and living in the fast lane, but it is always an extremely exciting way to make photographs

Fashion Flashback: Best Trends of 2012

As a fashion college student, you know better than nearly anybody else how quickly trends in the fashion industry can come and go. One accessory might be all the rage in winter, only to become the biggest laughingstock of the spring. The ins and outs of the fashion industry are so hard to keep track of in fact, that the few designers, photographers, fashion magazine editors and stylists that make it big in the business, are often considered gifted for being able to so skillfully keep their fingers on the pulse of fashion. Even the most hard-working of all students attending fashion colleges will accept the fact that they will not necessarily make it that far up the fashion totem pole… However, despite that fact, one shouldn’t let themself be fooled into thinking that fashion trend analyses are only for the industry’s elite. Just to prove that fact, here’s our short list of some of the year 2012’s best fashion design trends.

From red carpets, to runways, to regular old street shoes, there was no shortage of platforms in the year 2012. In the world of high fashion, Italian designer Miuccia Prada sent her models down the runway in futuristic, socked space slippers, many standing on sky-high platforms. On city sidewalks all over, fashion school students rocked 1920’s style oxfords with psychedelic platforms added for extra effect. Either way, there was surely no doubt about it; platform shoes were a defining footwear trend in 2012.

One thing’s for sure about this last year in fashion: it’s been full of flirtatious, feminine accents! For instance, peplum dresses, skirts, tops and jackets could be seen all over, paired with heels OR flats. Sheer, wide-knit sweaters and see-through lace tops were dressed up and down, and sky-high stilettos have never been more in style. Fresh-faced models have never looked so girly, and the streets proved that the trend had caught on all over the place.

The uber-feminine trend was not the only statement to magically materialize within the bounds of the fashion industry. This last year, the fashion-forward delighted in mixing it up by color-blocking, and mix-and-matching the brightest, boldest colors and prints. Leave it to the fashion industry to speed up the pace just when things look like they’re getting boring…

Contributing to the futuristic fashion themes of the year 2012, was the theme of gender ambiguity. From perfectly-tailored pant suits and tuxedo blazers, to skirts for men, professional designers of all kinds and fashion design college kids alike experimented with this boundary-pushing, playful design trend.

Types of Fashion and Clothing

People use clothing and fashion to help identify with a certain social group, communicate, show status, or a means of self-expression. Many people rely on the chosen style of clothing to help give an extension of their personalities. Fashion is certain to vary in regards to social group, occupation, status, age, region, country, religion, culture and similar other factors. A preferred style of fashion is certain to relate to form and function, as well as personality and social needs. Fashionable clothing is certain to fall into a variety of classifications and categories, including:

High Fashion

High fashion (also referred to as Haute Couture) is the more exclusive and custom-made outfits created by the top fashion designers and design houses. Many of the materials are carefully sourced to help provide the more unique and distinctive finish. High fashion clothing is of course expensive and this limits its availability in the fashion world.

Ready-to-wear clothing isn’t able to give the precise fit offered by the custom-make range. They are sold in standard sizes to fit the majority of the shopping public. Petite-size and plus-size outfits are also available in this range, but there is certain to be less choice offered compared to the standard sizes. A selection of high-end off the rack fashion outfits are offered by some of the finer fashion houses to make the well-known fashion brands more accessible to the wide marketplace. The clothing in the ready-to-wear line is manufactured in less expensive fabrics compared to what is likely to be seen with the bespoke clothes.

Mass-market fashion

Mass-market is a clothing line that is cheaply and quickly produced in high volume in the more standard sizes using large manufacturing facilities. Mass-market clothing is often known by the term disposable fashion since it is often seasonal in nature and manufactured in the cheapest materials available. This range is the most readily available fashion choice and offered at the most affordable end of the market.
